Pearl Beach Reunio July 2017

It was in the midst of Winter, July to be specific, with some of the best haphazard apricity of the year. Four days of golden sunshine to bask and play in with some old friends. It was our weekend to reconnect with some old peripatetic soul mates via a reunion at Pearl Beach.
Not only did we have Gary, Ute, Luke, Lauren and Max return from overseas for the first time in many years we also had several superlatives to content with. There were three birthday celebrations in one weekend: Nola, Oli and Will plus a record number of families and friends necessitating not one but two houses as close a possible together. The sensation of retrouvailles was strong and there is no better word yet for old friends who have perhaps just met.

There were a slew of activities including slacklining, bouldering, some good attempts at fishing, swimming and shoaring, a yoga class as well as - needless to say - a day of rock climbing at the nearby crag. Due the record number of people, we had to cater for a minimum of six families with at least two kids each and some friends, two houses were essential, in addition to Will’s caravan plus a couple of tents as a backup plan. The pictures will tell the rest of the story...

The climbing spot we visited was Mt Ettalong- south side for the first area were we established a nice line for the kids. Some of the classics here are:

  • Left end Carrots (17**) with the book corner start and the handle bar undercling.
  • Slopey Pocket Carrots (22*) tough moves over a bulge with a hidden pocket, then easy face.

Further along is Bayview which has a lot of potential but currently only two icon lines:

  • Where there is a Will there is a Way (21***) classic cave lip with crux exit move.
  • Baywatch R.H.S (23*) very thin climbing with bolts slightly to big for bolt plates. Exciting.
I will make an attempt here to list all the stars of the show: the Fumeauxs with Ute, Gary, Lauren, Luke, Max; the Dagassans with Amy, Patrick, Noemi and Zoe; The Cummins with Nola, Bryan, Oilver and Leonardo, Will and Susie, Martha, Christophe; the Crockers with Larisa, Mat, Raphaela, Gabriel; the Rosenbaums with Louise, Roman, Chris, Roman J.; Dave, Jason, Diane, Elka, Mat’s brother John and Will’s former lodgers 1 and 2 with baby. Phew I think that was it. Not a bad headcount and definitely some kind of record.

It was a great time with family and firiends and the last word - although a little corny perhaps - belongs to the magic of poetry

If I could catch a rainbow..
I would do it just for you,
And share with you its beauty
On the days you are feeling blue.
If I could build a mountain
You could call your very own,
A place to find serenity...
A place to be alone.
If I could take your troubles ...
I would toss them in the sea,
But all these things I'm finding
Are impossible for me.
I cannot build a mountain
Or catch a rainbow fair,
But let me be what I know best...
A friend that's always there.
